RYABOV: Symphony No. 4 / Concerto of Waltzes
Ryabov’s Fourth Symphony, dedicated to the memory of Johannes Brahms and written in honour of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth, is a good example of his allusive style, containing three direct quotations from Brahms (one from his own Fourth Symphony) and numerous evocations of Brahmsian orchestration. The Concerto of Waltzes, neo-romantic in idiom and described by the composer as the “Music of Shadows”, is likewise seasoned with some familiar tunes, which get an unfamiliar treatment.
