GODOWSKY, L.: Piano Music, Vol. 5 - Piano Sonata in E Minor (Scherbakov)
Godowsky’s incomparable but never flamboyant keyboard mastery, coupled with his love of polyphony, resulted in a style of composition that is extraordinarily testing for the pianist, but never musically ostentatious. The centerpiece of this recital, the fifth volume in the Marco Polo edition of Godowsky’s piano music, is his Sonata, a work of greatly varying moods that lasts over fifty minutes. This major work is balanced by four works typical of Godowsky’s lighter compositions for the piano. Together they possess a delicacy that belies his reputation as a barnstorming virtuoso.
