STERNEFELD: Mater Dolorosa
After its première in 1936, Daniel Sternefeld’s only opera Mater dolorosa remained unperformed until the performances captured here, its strong anti-war sentiments causing it to be deemed Entartete Kunst or degenerate art. The imposing score, a series of extended tableaux creating a seamless span of music, forms a useful link from the late-Romantic era into the mainstream twentieth century. “Certainly recommended to the adventurous” commented Fanfare on an earlier Marco Polo disc of music by Sternefeld.
