MOYZES, A.: Symphonies Nos. 11 and 12 (Slovak Radio Symphony, L. Slovák)
With Eugene Suchoň and Jan Cikker, Alexander Moyzes must be considered one of the three leading Slovak composes of the early twentieth century. To the orchestra of the great late romantics such as Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, Moyzes added astringent harmonies and rhythms drawn from the folk music of his native country, to create an individual yet highly approachable musical voice. The Eleventh and Twelfth Symphonies complete his cycle of symphonies all of which are available on the Marco Polo label. They confirm Moyzes’ stature as a major symphonist in the great Central European tradition.
