HOMS: 7 Impromptus / 2 Soliloquies
The Variations on a Popular Catalan Theme serve as a blue-print for an orchestral work of the same title, written in 1943. The Seven Pieces suggest a development of the serial technique of Schoenberg, while the Impromptus, written between 1955 and 1960, represent a more serious application of this system, but in music of great interest and variety. The Soliloquies of 1972, from a series of works under this title for different instruments, provide music as characteristic as it is moving and memorable.
