Romantic Orchestral Music by Flemish Composers, Vol. 1
This CD presents works by three leading exponents of the Flemish Romantic School, from Peter Benoit, often regarded as the founding father of the movement, to Lodewijk de Vocht, who, as a conductor, introduced many 20th-century works to a Belgian audiences. Benoit’s aim was to create music in a specifically Flemish style, based on language and folk-song, and he did much to raise the standard of music-making in Belgium, establishing the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp. Benoit’s favourite student Lodewijk Mortelmans contributed greatly to musical life in Antwerp by co-founding the series Nieuwe Concerten (New Concerts), in which many of the works of Benoit, de Vocht and Mortelmans received their first performances.
