Romantic Orchestral Music by Flemish Composers, Vol. 2
This CD presents works by four leading exponents of the Flemish Romantic School. Three of the composers are directly linked. Peter Benoit is often regarded as the founding father of the movement, while his favourite student Lodewijk Mortelmans contributed greatly to musical life in Antwerp by cofounding the series Nieuwe Concerten (New Concerts), in which many of the works on this disc received their first performances. Jef van Hoof was a pupil of Mortelmans, and spiritual heir of Benoit, a tireless organizer and conductor of Flemish song festivals. Standing somewhat apart from the others, Arthur Meulemans was influenced by French Impressionism and did much to promote the works of Debussy and Ravel in Belgium.
