FAESY: Columbus / Sempach / Der Triumph der Liebe
The Swiss composer Fäsy wrote several large-scale orchestral works in a style reminiscent of Wagner and Liszt. In six episodes, the Dramatic Suite Columbus is the most substantial of Fäsy’s orchestral works: it depicts Christopher Columbus’ long and adventurous journey to the unknown New World. Sempach is a symphonic poem commemorating the defeat of the Hapsburgs by the Swiss at the Battle of Sempach in 1356. The two Preludes, Götz von Berlichingen and Der Triumph der Liebe, capture the atmosphere of Goethe’s and Schiller’s literary works of the same names.
