BERNERS, Lord: Carrosse du Saint-Sacrement (Le) (Sung in English) [Opera] (Caddy, A. Oliver, Winfield, Buchan, BBC Scottish Symphony, N. Cleobury)
Lord Berners, painter, writer and composer, was a man of extraordinary talent and eccentricity. His only opera, Le Carrosse du Saint-Sacrement, based on a story by Prosper Mérimée, deals with the predicament of a Viceroy of Peru who rashly gives his mistress his new carriage, with unexpected consequences. The Times described it as “an unqualified success… Lord Berners’ music makes the work an unalloyed enjoyment”.
