Largely self-taught, Lord Berners had a cosmopolitan outlook which set him apart from his British contemporaries. Irony, satire and a degree of submerged romanticism were the hallmarks of his eclectic style, but his artistic achievements were nonetheless those of a true professional. Best-known for his ballets, Berners was also an excellent miniaturist, whose compositions for solo piano and for voice and piano are pieces of refined charm and whimsical good humour.
