GAROFALO: Romantic Symphony / Violin Concerto
Born in Rome in 1886, Garofalo composed a considerable body of sacred and secular music now largely forgotten. Until its Moscow revival in 1994, his Romantic Symphony, admired by Toscanini and Nikisch, had been performed in full only once. By its sheer size, thematic development, orchestration, musical architecture and melodic inventiveness, this is a work that belongs both to the Viennese tradition, and to the revival of symphonic music brought about by Garofalo’s contemporaries, Respighi, Malipiero, Casella and Pizzetti.
