SCHWEITZER: Alceste
Although Mozart had later reservations about Schweitzer, a possible rival, he was at first on friendly terms with him in Mannheim in 1777 and happy to acknowledge Alceste as the first German Singspiel. This seminal work was the result of a collaboration with one of the greatest German writers of the day, Wieland, who was also in Mannheim at the time. Composer and writer opened the way to a genre that led to The Magic Flute and later to Der Freischütz and German romantic opera.
