Bantock’s Hebridean Symphony is a powerful work, lyrical, brooding and violent. It makes much use of folk-inspired material, and frequently shows the influence of Sibelius and Richard Strauss in its command of atmosphere. Overall it conjures up the images of a legendary Nordic saga. By contrast the Old English Suite and Russian Scenes are superbly constructed light music. The first contains arrangements of well-known pieces by Elizabethan composers. Bantock’s arrangement is in the same style as Sir Hamilton Harty’s arrangement of Handel’s Water Music. The Russian Scenes consist of a suite of typical Slavic dances, brim full of energy.
