Though Peter Il’yich Tchaikovsky was a highly prolific and successful composer, he offered only six chamber works for publication. This brief catalogue included three complete string quartets and four single movements, which remained among his manuscripts until published as Four Early Pieces. With its vivacious scherzo and vigorous finale, the Third Quartet is as fine and powerful a score as the composer’s popular First Quartet.
