SMETANA: Ma Vlast (My Country)

Smetana was a pioneer of Czech musical nationalism, leading where Dvořák and others would follow. His evocative series of symphonic poems included in Má Vlast (My Country) depicts the countryside of Bohemia, as the waters of the River Vltava flow towards Prague, through the fields suggested in From Bohemia’s Woods and Fields. Other parts of the cycle represent legend and the dramatic patriotic struggle of the Hussite wars.
