SCHUBERT, F.: Piano Sonatas, D. 845 and D. 568 (Jandó)
Some of Schubert’s finest music is to be found in his piano sonatas. These cover the full emotional gamut: from deep introspection to light-hearted frivolity. Schubert’s command of the keyboard is always fluent and ‘pianistic’, making this music both gratifying to play and highly satisfying to hear. The two sonatas on this recording are among the ‘best of the best’. The Sonata in A minor, D. 845, is a lengthy work but never seems a minute too long, so extensive is its emotional range. The posthumous Sonata in E flat major is more condensed, but still contains plenty of Schubert’s memorable tunes, jaunty rhythms and subtle harmonic shifts.
