BRUCKNER, A.: Symphony No. 3 (original 1873 version, ed. L. Nowak) (Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Tintner)
Anton Bruckner is regarded as one of the great symphonists of the 19th century. His symphonies broke new ground, the sheer size and scope of each work combining the passion of Beethoven and the orchestral weight of Wagner. The Third Symphony contains one of the composer’s best-loved melodies, a trumpet call which opens the Symphony and which was much admired by Wagner. This performance of his original score of 1873 shows the composer’s incredible capacity for musical innovation which was somewhat tempered in later revisions.
