Most of Hotteterre’s music gives a vivid picture of the musical styles most popular with the French in the early 18th-century: beautifully crafted, graceful and highly ornate. But there was an Italian element, too, imparting a higher degree of emotional expression than the Parisians were then accustomed to. These emotions range from a tender poignancy in many of the slower movements to an unbuttoned joyfulness in many of the fast ones.
