HINDEMITH / BARBER / LARSSON / JANACEK: Wind Quintets
As wind instruments improved in the late eighteenth century, composers perceived their commercial potential and created the new genre of the wind quintet. It has since become an essential component of chamber music, with major composers of the twentieth century adding to the repertoire. Paul Hindemith completed his Kleine Kammermusik in 1922, with the intention of sweeping away the cobwebs of the late-romantic era, and two years later Czech composer Leoš Janáček brought a new sound spectrum to the quintet with his enchanting score, Mládí (Youth). In Summer Music the American composer Samuel Barber produces an evocative mood-picture of a warm summer day, while from Sweden, Lars-Erik Larsson takes wind music into the abstract world of contemporary composition.
