GLAZUNOV, A.K.: Orchestral Works, Vol. 11 - Concerto Ballata / Chant du menestrel (Rudin, Moscow Symphony, Golovschin)
Alexander Glazunov was one of the most influential Russian composers of his time. Dismissing modernism, he continued to write in an attractive and popular romantic idiom. His prodigious output, which includes the famous ballet The Seasons, demonstrates an ability to create the most colourful orchestral sounds.
Included here are three major works for cello and orchestra. Tender and passionate, they explore the singing quality of the instrument, yet demand a soloist of the utmost dexterity and virtuosity. These are complemented by two works in homage, one elegiac, the other dramatic.
