KODÁLY, Z.: Duo for Violin and Cello / Hungarian Rondo / Adagio for Cello / Sonatina (Preucil, Kliegel, Jandó)
Together with Bartók, Kodály was the creator of a new era of interest in Hungarian folk music, using it as a source of inspiration for his symphonic and instrumental works. His international reputation has been built on a series of colourful and brilliant orchestral scores. Among a modest output, his series of works for cello reminds us that he was a skilled performer on the instrument, his knowledge of its technical boundaries enabling him to write the exceedingly difficult unaccompanied Cello Sonata. In the Sonatina and the Duo for Violin and Cello, he demonstrates his gift of creating attractive melody, while showing his respect for his musical heritage in an arrangement for cello and piano of a Prelude and Fugue from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier.
