DVORAK: Wind Serenade / JANACEK: Mladi / ENESCU: Dixtuor

Three very different composers who had no personal involvement in the world of wind instruments produced three of the finest works for wind ensemble. Dvořák’s Wind Serenade, the most frequently performed of the three, is a work of considerable lyrical charm. It was completed in 1878, and gave the young Czech composer one of his early successes. Thirty-six years later, another Czech musician, Leoš Janáček, explored aspects of the wind quintet when creating his fascinating score, Mládí (‘Youth’). Between these two styles comes the great Romanian composer George Enescu, whose three-movement Dixtuor is a luxuriant score of radiant colours.
