BARTÓK, B.: Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 (G. Pauk, Polish National Radio Symphony, Wit)
Bartók’s two Violin Concertos are among the 20th century masterpieces for the instrument. Completed when he was a youthful 27, the first is a tender work dedicated to a young violinist, Stefi Geyer, in whom he had confided his innermost feelings. It was never performed in his lifetime, and remained unpublished until 1959. Bartók’s Second Concerto was written thirty years after the first. It is a frequently turbulent score which yet contains one of the most exquisite slow movements in the violin repertoire.
