Born in France in 1886, Marcel Dupré became the most famous organist-composer of the twentieth century, with a substantial catalogue of organ, chamber and symphonic works. His chamber works use the full range of subtle organ sonorities, bringing new colours to conventional string groups. To educate young organists in the development of their technique, Dupré composed 79 Chorales, Op. 28, based on the concept of Bach’s use of chorale melodies. Though of practical interest to organists, they were also devised to be attractive to the listener.
