DVORAK: Violin Sonata, Op. 57 / Violin Sonatina, Op. 100
The four works on this first volume of Dvořák’s complete music for violin and piano include works written between 1873 and 1893, thus spanning his mature years as a composer. The Sonata in F major, written in 1880, shows the influence of Brahms, while the Sonatina in G major, completed just a fortnight before the first performance of the New World Symphony in 1893, is a fine example of the music which Dvořák composed in America. The Romance in F minor and Four Romantic Pieces are lighter in mood, and have the charm and immediacy that have made Dvořák’s music so popular. The young Chinese violinist Qian Zhou, who won an amazing five awards at the 1987 Marguerite Long / Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris, now stands in the front rank of world-class violinists.
