SCHUBERT, F.: Piano Sonatas, D. 840 and 959 (Jandó)

Some of Schubert’s finest music is to be found in his piano sonatas. These cover the full emotional gamut, from deep introspection to light-hearted frivolity. Schubert’s command of the keyboard is always fluent and ‘pianistic’, making this music both gratifying to play and highly satisfying to hear. The two piano sonatas included in this volume of Naxos’s ongoing survey of these works are among the most wide-ranging that Schubert wrote. The Beethovenian Sonata in A major is a late work, of great musical and emotional profundity. The unfinished Sonata in C major is also a substantial piece of music and was known in the nineteenth century as the ‘Reliquie’ Sonata, supposedly as a final relic of Schubert’s piano music.
