GIULIANI: Flute and Guitar Duets
The Italian-born guitar virtuoso and composer Mauro Giuliani, settled in Vienna in 1806 and became active there as a teacher, performer, and composer. His Grand Potpourri combines melodies from the popular and art music of the day, including quotations from Don Giovanni, The Sérénade is in three straightforward movements, but ends with a rousing Rondo allegro, rather than the more usual March. The Grand Duo Concertant features infectious melodies and brilliant passages for both the flute and guitar. The Grand Sérénade opens with an attractive theme followed by a set of variations and a concluding March and Trio, as was customary in Vienna at this time. The writing for both instruments is masterly throughout, with the guitar occasionally breaking into Rossinian flourishes.
