Belgian by birth, French by choice, a gifted pianist and organist, César Franck is remembered chiefly for a handful of outstanding symphonic, chamber and instrumental works. During the last thirty years of his life he wrote a masterful series of large scale organ works of which the Prélude, fugue et variation (1862) is the best known.
