ELGAR-PAYNE: Symphony No. 3
Elgar’s Symphony No. 3 was commissioned by the BBC in 1932, but the work was left far from complete at the time of the composer’s death in February 1934. The various pages of manuscript have been the subject of speculation ever since, offering a tantalising hint of a late masterpiece. Anthony Payne’s elaboration of the sketches into full-scale symphonic form now realises the potential of Elgar’s conception, bringing these rich fragments to life at last.
