HAYDN: Symphonies, Vol. 22 (Nos. 13, 36 / Sinfonia Concertante)
The three work on this disc, though composed some thirty years apart, are linked by the prominence given to opportunities for solo displays by woodwind and string instruments. Thus in the two relatively early symphonies from the 1760s, when for Haydn the symphony was the principal instrumental genre, we find a number of concerto-like movements for cello, flute and violin, as well prominent parts for the horn and timpani. The Sinfonia Concertante, dating from 1792, is a true concertante symphony calling for four soloists, that brings to a brilliant and sophisticated culmination the earlier experimentation of combining symphony and concerto forms.
