Music for Saxophone and Orchestra
Saxophones first appeared in military bands in France and the United States but their place in classical music was assured by Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. One of the most influential scores came at the turn of the century with Debussy’s atmospheric Rapsodie, and concertos for the instrument were later written by established composers such as Glazunov and Ibert. Sohre Rahbari, described by Fanfare magazine as ‘one of the most polished saxophonists I know’ has devised this programme as a virtuoso showcase.
