Brilliant pianist, outstanding conductor and distinguished teacher, Ernő Dohnányi had little time to compose, his total opus numbering no more than 48 compositions. He is mostly remembered for one work, the charming Variations on a Nursery Song, part of the standard orchestral repertoire. He did, however, compose many fine works for solo piano, full of the long sweeping melodies that characterize his music. Though he was writing well into the 20th century, his music continued in the tradition of the great romantic era, often using the folk songs of his native Hungary.
