LERNER and LOEWE: Orchestral Selections
The collaboration between the lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner and the Viennese-born composer Frederick Loewe which began in 1942 at New York’s Lamb’s Club, produced some of the most successful of all twentieth-century musicals. Their first breakthrough came in 1947 with Brigadoon. Lerner then went on to collaborate with Kurt Weill and Burton Lane before working once again with Loewe on Paint Your Wagon, set during the California gold rush of 1853. Lerner and Loewe scored their biggest commercial and critical hit with My Fair Lady. The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical was adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalian. It broke all box-office records, went on to win several Tony awards, and Oscars for the film version. Their next collaboration Gigi, baed on a novelette by Colette, also won several Oscars. Their final work together was Camelot which starred Richard Burton and Julie Andrews; though a hit with the audience, it was not critically well-received.
