SOLER, A.: Sonatas for Harpsichord, Vol. 8
A pupil of Domenico Scarlatti, the Catalan composer Antonio Soler spent much of his life as a monk at the Escorial. He won a wide reputation as a theorist, combining mathematical studies with the design of organs. Soler wrote music for the church but is known chiefly for his 150 varied and colourful keyboard sonatas, mostly written for the harpischord. Highlights of this eighth volume include Sonata No. 7, one of Soler’s most dashing and brilliant display pieces, the heartfelt and poignant Sonata No. 47, and Sonata No. 48, one of the composer̓s stormiest and most restless works.
