RUBINSTEIN, A.: Violin Concerto / CUI, C.: Suite Concertante (Takako Nishizaki, Slovak Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Halasz, Schermerhorn)
Anton Rubinstein’s Violin Concerto and César Cui’s Suite Concertante represent two very different aspects of music in Russia in the nineteenth century. Rubinstein, one of the greatest pianists of his day, belongs to German tradition, while Cui was one of the five nationalist composers who affected to despise technical accomplishments that they regarded as foreign. Both works have been relatively neglected and make an attractive addition to the violin repertoire.
