SCHREKER: Overtures
Schreker’s music is highly romantic with a very lush harmonic palette. The Fantastic Overture, composed in 1903, demonstrates the full his mastery of the late-romantic orchestra. The Symphonic Overture Ekkehard, is based on a widely read novel by Viktor von Scheffel about the lives of two tenth century monks. Der Schatzgraber (1920) is set in a fairy-tale world of German medievalism. Die Gezeichneten (1918), a tragedy about a crippled nobleman and his rival in love, is probably Schreker’s most controversial work. Concerned with the healing power of music, Das Spielwerk followed the success of Schreker’s best known work, the opera Der ferne Klang (Naxos 8.660074-75).
