Krzysztof Penderecki’s violin concertos represent an expressive and powerful aspect of his music; progressive, yet rooted in late nineteenth century harmony. As the title to the second concerto suggests, musical ideas constantly evolve and transform throughout the works. Although they are both single movement works, frequent changes of mood and tempo take the rôle of traditional movements, consistent with Penderecki’s maxim that old forms must be revived in order to create new music.
