CLEMENTI, M.: Early Piano Sonatas, Vol. 1 (Alexander-Max)

Muzio Clementi was famous throughout his lifetime as both a virtuoso performer and composer, touring Europe, whilst in London he was a key figure in the manufacture of the newly developed piano and in music publication. Clementi’s early Sonatas, arguably his greatest compositional achievement, establish a musical language extending from the simplest galant writing of the G major Sonata, WO14, written when he was sixteen, through the decorated melodic style of the 1779 Sonata in A, to the dynamic extremes, propulsive rhythms and octave melodies of the 1785 Sonata in F minor, Op. 13 No. 6, which we associate with the young Beethoven ten years later. His legacy, both through his compositions and his teachings, was felt throughout the 19th century.
