GIULIANI: Guitar Music, Vol. 2
The Neapolitan composer Mauro Giuliani was the greatest guitar virtuoso of his generation and one of the finest composers for the instrument. His music was neatly described by his biographer as ‘Viennese classicism … nourished by Italian lyricism’. Heroic in length rather than substance, Giuliani’s one-movement Sonata Eroica is one of only three sonatas he composed. The three Potpourris include operatic arias, folk songs, street songs and Viennese Ländler, all ingeniously linked together in an attractive tapestry of melody and harmony. Some of the tunes are immediately identifiable; they include Mozart’s Non più andrai from The Marriage of Figaro as well as many of Rossini’s melodies.
