The French composer Charpentier was greatly influenced by the Italian style, and studied with Carissimi in Rome. Much of his music was either composed for the church or based on religious themes, and the Christmas works on this recording, with their flowing melodies, dramatic use of silence, chromatic and descriptive harmonies and expressive modulations are further justification for his reputation as one of the most important French composers of sacred music.
