This collection presents popular twentieth-century works for saxophone and orchestra. The refinement of Glazunov’s Concerto is counterbalanced by the nocturnal magic of Debussy’s Rhapsodie, heard on this recording in its original version, the exoticism of Milhaud and Villa-Lobos and Ibert’s jazzy Concertino. The disc concludes with a new piece by the contemporary Greek composer, Ekaterini Karamessini. Described as “one of the best saxophone soloists of his generation”, Theodore Kerkezos has devised this programme as a virtuoso showcase.
