Philippe Gaubert was among the most prominent French musicians of the period between the two world wars. He assimilated many of the innovations of Franck, Ravel and Debussy. Volume 3 of his complete works for flute features his two Romances, the first of which is one of his most sustained lyrical outpourings, while the second is by turns whimsical and impetuous. Also included on this recording are a dozen of Gaubert’s transcriptions, ranging from the familiarity of Mozart’s The Magic Flute to the rarely heard theatrical music of André Campra.
