ZEMLINSKY: Rustic Dances, Op. 1 / Four Fantasies, Op. 9 / A Ray of Light
Although the music of Zemlinsky has found an increasingly wide public during the past quarter-century, his piano works remain the least known of his output. This disc collates all of the published music that Zemlinsky wrote for piano after 1891, before he effectively abandoned the medium at the turn of the twentieth century. Whereas the Ländliche Tänze (‘Rustic Dances’) Op. 1 and Vier Balladen (‘Four Ballads’) display the influence of Strauss, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Brahms and others, the Vier Fantasien (Four Fantasies’) and Ein Lichtstrahl (‘A Ray of Light’), the latter unperformed until 1992 on account of the difficulty of its writing, are Zemlinsky’s most imposing and assured piano works.
