FROBERGER, J.J.: Toccatas and Partitas / Meditation / Lamentation on the Death of Ferdinand III (Vartolo)
Froberger belongs to a generation of German musicians trained in Italy thanks to the generosity of enlightened princes deeply imbued with Latin and Italian culture. Composed for a seventeenth-century German society obsessed by the idea of death, ever-present in the deprivations of the Thirty Years War, the partitas and toccatas include works on the transience of earthly life and faith in the life to come. Among the best known of these veritable outpourings of grief are the Méditation on Froberger’s own future death and his consolatory Lament on the death of Ferdinand III.
