BAX: Piano Works, Vol. 2
Although best known for his symphonic poems such as Tintagel, Bax also wrote prolifically for the piano, his instrument from the first. In his twenties he appeared in concerts playing his own music and that of famous European contemporaries whose sounds and influence he was quick to assimilate. On this second release of the complete piano works (Volume 1 is available on Naxos 8.557439), the large scale Third and Fourth Piano Sonatas, quasi-symphonic in both conception and treatment, are combined with atmospheric miniatures in which Bax absorbs the worlds of Debussy and Scriabin.
