GARBIZU: Piano Music / Traditional Basque Songs and Dances
A constant presence in the musical life of the Spanish Basque Country throughout the twentieth century, Tomás Garbizu composed prolifically in a number of different genres, drawing his inspiration principally from Gregorian chant and folk music. Danzas vascas is a festive suite that follows the pattern of an ezpata-dantza (sword dance), with much complex and spectacular piano writing. The Santesteban Collection ranges widely from the eighteenth-century Iru Damatxo (Three ladies), to twentieth-century love, satirical and working songs, and even tunes borrowed from other types of music, such as Iriyarena (Music for the fettered ox), a Haydn minuet translated into Basque folk-music.
