Carl Loewe was both a prolific composer and a performing musician, remembered today chiefly for his songs. Set in the Protestant religious tradition of mid-19th century Germany, Das Sühnopfer des neuen Bundes (The Expiatory Sacrifice of the New Covenant), with its biblical recitatives, chorales and strong dramatic feeling, clearly owes much to Bach, and to the revival of the St Matthew Passion in Berlin in 1829 under the young Felix Mendelssohn. Musically it combines something of this earlier tradition with a relatively conventional contemporary musical language.
