RODRIGO: Concierto Pastorale / Fantasia para un Gentilhombre (Complete Orchestral Works, Vol. 8)
Rodrigo’s music, which so often unites the glories of ancient Spanish music with twentiethcentury textures and techniques, offers a sumptuous orchestral tapestry encapsulating the expressive themes of another age in modern colours. This is especially evident in the Concierto pastoral, written for the flautist James Galway, which conjures up the character of rural Spanish life, and in Fantasía para un Gentilhombre where the robustness of Spanish dance rhythms are combined with the skill and delicacy appropriate to their setting. This recording features the renowned Canadian flautist Joanna G’froerer who became the principal flautist of the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada at the age of twenty. She frequently appears as soloist both with this orchestra and the Vancouver, Quebec and Montreal symphony orchestras.
