Sister of the violinist Joseph Fuchs, Lillian Fuchs was among the most distinguished violists and teachers of her generation. Combining technical and musical interest, the studies she wrote for her instrument were conceived as a means of tackling the particular difficulties that she and fellow instrumentalists encountered, rather than following the common practice of adapting violin studies to the viola. They are performed on this recording by the composer’s granddaughter, Jeanne Mallow, who plays Lillian Fuchs’ own magnificent Gasparo da Salò viola.
