BURLEIGH: Music for Violin and Piano
The violinist and composer Cecil Burleigh, studied in Berlin before returning to the US where he became an eminent professor of violin, theory and composition. His extensive compositional output embraced many genres, including concertos, symphonies, string quartets and settings for voice and piano, but remains largely unknown today. The “character” or salon pieces for violin and piano are elegant, compact miniatures which owe much, both in form and subject matter, to Edward MacDowell, one of the first major American composers. Both men were fascinated with Native Americans, both wrote music that has a quintessentially “American” sound, both were academics in music schools, and both took a European training back to their own land.
